Music

Our music subject leader is Mrs Sarah Prior. Miss Walsh and Mr Delaney also support with the leadership of music.

"Music is the universal language of mankind." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Our vision for Music at Holy Spirit

At Holy Spirit, it is our intention that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We follow a scheme called Charanga.  We want music to be an enjoyable experience for all children and aim to develop not only their talent as musicians, but also their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We are committed to helping children the impact music can have and the value of it in the wider community. Our objective is that children are able to use their musical skills, teamed with their progressing musical vocabulary to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts such as concerts, choir, watching a live orchestra, singing at the switching on of the Christmas tree lights in Parr and singing and sharing our talent with the residents of Madison Court Care home.

We often go on visits to widen our cultural experiences of Music. Each class will have the opportunity to visit the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall this year to listen to and watch the world famous Philharmonic Orchestra.

These concerts link directly to Key Stage 2 Science and Geography curriculum by inspiring pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination about the Earth's key physical and human processes.

Primary National Curriculum for Music

Our Holy Spirit Choir

Our choir is led by Miss Walsh and Mr Delaney. We have 32 children in our choir which meet every Thursday 3-4pm to sing! We have been to Madison Court Care home this term to share some songs of Peace. This term we are looking forward to singing at the switching on of the Parr Christmas tree!

Nursery

In Nursery, music is embedded in many of our sessions, we use it to engage the children and unbeknownst to them, access the curriculum.  In this video the children have been working on Nursery Rhymes during their Phonics sessions.

The Nursery children learn a weekly Nursery Rhyme, this works hand in hand with their phonics sessions.  They particularly enjoyed 'Miss Polly Had a Dolly', the children have learned all the actions and the words. Fantastic!!

In EYFS, we have a music area for the children to engage with during our 'Adventure Time'. The children can be very creative and love to explore the different musical instruments.

Reception

Reception have been working very hard in their music lessons, since their return after Christmas. They have been focusing on a topic called 'Everyone', this has required them to learn a selection of Nursery Rhymes, learning the song and the actions.

Year 1

Thank you to Leyla and Emily for chatting with me about what they have been doing in Year 1, during the Autumn term.  They have been busy in their music lessons using the instruments to accompany 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. Fabulous Year 1!

In Spring the children have been working on a piece called 'Into the Groove'.  The children have enjoyed working on the piece in a selection of different music styles.  The sessions also include fun warm ups! Fabulous!

Year 2

Thank you Nico and Sophia, for sharing what you have been doing in Year 2 in the Autumn term.  It sounds like you have been very busy learning lots of new songs for your Nativity!

In Spring 2 the children worked particularly hard with the unit Zootime. They were asked to sing and play songs in the style of Reggae, focusing on animals from the zoo. They not only learned songs about animals but also played the glockenspiels in the same style.

Year 3

A huge thank you to Chisimdi for telling me about what Year 3 have been doing in the Autumn term.  They worked very hard with Mr Delaney on the keyboards, also learning 'Mary had a Little Lamb' and 'Jingle Bells'. Well done Year 3!!

Thank you to Mr Delaney and the Year 3 children, for letting me come into their music session to take some pictures. You were all amazing!!

Year 4

Thank you to our Year 4 ambassadors! They were very excited to tell me about the song they have been learning in music called 'Stop Bullying'. I can't wait to hear it!!

Year 5

We learnt to sing Bon Jovi's, 'Livin' on a prayer' and played the glockenspiels to it.

Our Year 5 children have been very busy in their music lessons learning the songs 'Living on a Prayer' and 'We Will Rock You!'.  Amazing!!

This half term our Year 5 children have been working on the musical piece 'Make You Feel My Love' originally by Bob Dylan but recently produced by Adele. The children not only sing the piece but also play the glockenspiel. Fantastic!!

Year 6

Thank you to Mr Delaney and Year 6, for letting me come into your keyboard session. You were all fabulous and so focused. Amazing!
