At Holy Spirit Catholic Primary school, we have designed our science curriculum with the intent that our children will develop an in-depth understanding of the world around them and a clear comprehension of how major scientific ideas have played a vital role in society, to prepare them for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world. We intend to provide all children, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability, with a broad and balanced science curriculum.
We intend to provide an outstanding grounding for future scientists and engineers. Our aim is to build science capital for all our children, regardless of their background and starting point so that they are inspired to continue to use science in their everyday life, future education, and careers. The staff at Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences, which allow children to explore their outdoor environment and locality, thus developing their scientific enquiry and investigative skills.
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Planning for science is a process in which all teachers are involved to ensure that the school gives full coverage of, ‘The National Curriculum programmes of study for Science 2014’ and, ‘Understanding of the World’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Science teaching at Holy Spirit Primary School involves adapting and extending the curriculum to match all pupils’ needs. Science is taught as discrete units and lessons to ensure coverage. We have also developed scientific vocabulary tasks, which are completed both at the beginning and threaded through each lesson. Clear pre and post learning tasks enable the children to articulate scientific concepts clearly and precisely, assisting them in making their thinking clear, both to themselves and others. They also show clear progression and children’s newfound knowledge and understanding.
The impact and measure of this is to ensure children not only acquire the appropriate age related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives. Through our science curriculum, all children will have a wider variety of scientific skills including both knowledge and understanding as well as enquiry and investigative skills. Children will be able to question the world around them and understand that they have the power to impact and make change. Our children will also be able to explain and reason using sound and secure scientific vocabulary. Through this, they will work collaboratively, learning from each other and challenging each other. The ultimate impact is that their experience in science will raise their aspirations, which will see them into further study and provide the basis for a rich and successful adult life.
