Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 class page!

Class Teachers -  Mrs Lamble Monday and Mrs Martin Tuesday-Friday

Teaching Assistant - Mrs Roberts

Year 1 is an amazing year and we can't wait to share it with your child! In Year 1 your child will be making the exciting transition from Early Years to Key Stage One. Our mornings will gradually become more structured with daily Maths, English, Guided reading and Phonics sessions. Phonics is a key element of Year 1 life, and we practise regularly to ensure all our children are equipped to decode and blend words. Our aim is to ensure all children reach their full potential and develop a love of learning. This involves building a curriculum that suits each child in our class. Our foundation subjects are in the afternoons and we plan to ensure they are fun, inspiring and engaging to find out what we are learning please read our curriculum overview.

Year 1 Curriculum

Year 1 Curriculum overview

English

This term we have been working on:

-capital letters

-full stops

-finger spaces

-letter formation

We were able to demonstrate all we have learnt by writing some fantastic sentences to describe Elmer. In Autumn 2 we will be learning all about nouns and verbs.

We loved our Reading for Pleasure and Phonics Session with our parents and carers.  They were really impressed with how hard we are working!

Year 1 have been enjoying spending time in our beautiful school library. Sharing stories together helps to nurture their love of books and reminds us all that “Reading is the Key.”

PAThS
Year 1 have been learning how to give compliments with help from Twiggle!

We also learnt the compliment song before giving our Pupil of the Day their compliment

As part of our daily practice, we celebrate all the wonderful things about each other with our PAThS Pupil of the Day!

We give our POTD compliments - this could be something they're good at, something we like about their appearance or something about their character.

Our POTD is encouraged to give their self a compliment and this is taken home for a compliment to be given at home too. #PAThS #PSHE

We love giving out compliments in Year 1

NSPCC - PANTS

We've been talking PANTS! We know we have the right to say 'No!' and that a safe adult (that we trust) will always listen to us if something makes us feel upset or worried.

Protected Characteristics
For our Protected characteristics this half term we looked at our own beliefs we talked about how other people have different beliefs
We read the book the book All About Families by Mar Ferrero  and learnt about how they differ. We know our beliefs can differ too and God loves us all.

Anti-Bullying Week

Year 1  have been thinking about how they use their Powers For Good, to support our Anti-Bullying Week learning. They’ve been exploring their trusted adults (at home, school & other regular places), who they feel that they can talk to if something upsets them or if they feel worried about something. We discussed what makes a safe adult and we know that speaking up is always a way to use our ‘Power for Good’ #AntiBullyingWeek

Year 1 To Know You More Clearly

Branch 1 Creation & Covenant

We listened to the story of creation and explored it through our golden box. Why not ask your child to retell the story to you at home. They have been very busy thinking of ways that we can look after the world God gave us. I am sure they have been talking about picking up litter and turning the light off at home.

Branch 2: Prophecy and Promise

Branch 3: Galilee to Jerusalem

Stay and Pray

Humanities

Year 1 have enjoyed learning about toys from the past this half term. They had a special workshop also from As Creatives.

Maths

We have been learning all about Place value. We love outdoor Maths. We used the large tens frames and fir cones to represent numbers.  We have also been practising our counting and writing our numbers. Part-Whole models helped us with our addition work too.

In maths, we focus on making learning enjoyable and meaningful. The children have been using concrete resources to deepen their understanding of place value to 50 and to practise addition and subtraction within 20 — helping them build strong number sense.r text...

Science

In Science we have been learning all about different materials. We enjoyed investing different materials and their properties. We had so much fun exploring which materials were waterproof. This led us to finding out all about the scientist Charles Macintosh.
In Autumn 2/ Spring 1 we have been focusing on seasonal work including how the weather is reported and measured. We then started our new topic ‘animals including humans.

Attendance superstars!

We are trying to get 5 stars so we can have a pizza party! We love it when our whole class are in school and we have 100% attendance!

Meeting our Year 6 Buddies

We met our Year 6 Buddies who will be a great help to us all this year throughout Year 1!

Our Year 1 children love spending time with their Year 6 buddies. They especially enjoy choosing and sharing a book together in our school library. These special moments help build confidence, friendships and a love of reading.

P.E.

During our PE lessons we have been learning fundamental mult- sport skills. We have had so much fun with Connor and learnt some fantastic skills along the way. In Autumn 2 we will be completing dance lessons with Emma. We can’t wait for you to come and watch what we have learnt in our Christmas Nativity.

During the Spring term, the children have been working on improving their gymnastics and ball skills. They particularly enjoyed the excitement of dodgeball, showing great energy and teamwork.

Spanish

We are so lucky to be learning Spanish in Year 1. I am sure you will agree that they are developing brilliantly. Why not ask your child to count to 20 at home or to tell you the name of different food and drinks.

Art

Wow! The children have loved their art topic this term. We have been using our body to create spirals as we have been inspired by the artist  Molly Haslund

Our Year 1 pupils have been inspired by the work of Paul Klee, exploring watercolours and experimenting with a variety of painting techniques. The creativity and skill shown in their final pieces were truly impressive!
